The Federal High Court in Kano is set to deliver a ruling today in the suit challenging the validity of the Kano Emirates Council Repeal Law 2024.
The law was used by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to dethrone Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and reverse the creation of four emirates. The law also led to the re-appointment of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.
A kingmaker, Aminu Babba Danagundi, challenged the law, asking the court to declare it null and void.
The judge, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman, will also rule on a motion for stay of proceedings filed by the State Attorney General and Kano State Government.
The State House of Assembly and its speaker have filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal, seeking a stay of proceedings. However, the Court of Appeal has not fixed a date for hearing the appeal due to a lack of quorum.
Meanwhile, the police command in the state has said it will be deploying personnel to strategic areas to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
Residents have been advised to stay away from the court area and continue with their daily activities without fear. The police have assured adequate security of lives and property before, during, and after the court’s pronouncements.
The ruling is expected to bring clarity to the emirate tussle, which has seen the state government and federal government at odds. The development has also led to a rivalry between the two emirs, with Emir Bayero residing in a mini palace and
